Clubs Begin at the Alternative High School

Mackenzie Courtien feels better prepared to attend college next year thanks to the Bard Early College Hudson Valley program offered at Dutchess BOCES’ Career & Technical Institute. The Dover High School senior is one of 20 students enrolled in the program from schools in Dutchess County.
Students in the Careers in Plant and Animal Sciences program at Dutchess BOCES’ Career and Technical Institute (CTI) are looking forward to upcoming events and field trips. Rebecca Cossa, the teacher for the program, said that she and her students are excited.
“The course is really enhanced by out of school experiences,” said Cossa. “We’re going on field trips constantly throughout the year.”
Superintendents from across Dutchess BOCES’ component districts joined together on last month to learn about a project-based learning model where high school students of all talents and skills work together toward an end goal.
Ava Riina, LaNasia Anderson and Daniella McGann, students in the afternoon Early Childhood Education class at the Career & Technical Institute, will attend a speech given by First Lady Jill Biden at DAY ONE Early Learning Community in Poughkeepsie on October 6.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program at the Salt Point Center is off to a great start after students and staff enjoyed fresh orange slices on Oct. 3.
Dutchess BOCES will be hosting Open House at the Salt Point Center and the Alternative High School on Tuesday, October 10.

The Mid-Hudson Regional Partnership Center (MHRPC) is expanding the number of districts and educational organizations being offered targeted support by the center in the 2023-2024 school year.
All Dutchess BOCES employees met in the Salt Point Center (SPC) gymnasium for this year’s Convocation on September 5.
The District Superintendent Jason Schetelick opened the event with some supportive messages, stressing the sense of community that we need to have in order to succeed in our mission.
The Dutchess BOCES administrators welcomed about 60 new staff members at the New Hire Employee Orientation, an annual event put together each year during Administrators’ Week by the Human Resources division.
More than 50 students from Dutchess BOCES’s component districts took Regents exams August 16 and 17 at the Alternative High School. Exams included English, algebra I and II, global history, U.S. history and government, geometry, earth science, living environment.
This is one of many services offered by BOCES to high school students during the summer.
The Extended School Year Program (ESY) at Salt Point Center celebrated the end of the summer program on August 11 with students proudly showcasing what they learned through vibrant displays all around the hallways of SPC.
During summer, the Educational Resources (ER) division of Dutchess BOCES has been helping to provide expanded opportunities. Teachers and administrators have taken courses to improve their skillsets. After benefiting from workshops, book readings, and re-certifications, they can bring those skills to the students they serve. One of the best parts of doing it through BOCES, is the flexibility that it gives participants.
