Teachers learn about a variety of topics through a program offered by Dutchess BOCES and the Hudson Valley Writing Project. We’re partnering with the Hudson Valley Writing Project (HVWP) this month to provide teachers with training in place-based writing, leadership skills in facilitation and working with multilingual language learners. A series of three workshops is being offered.

Teacher as Facilitator: Building Your Leadership Skills with a Classroom Inquiry Project, July 21-23, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each dat at Dutchess BOCES Conference Center, 5 BOCES Road, Poughkeepsie. Participants in this class, facilitated by Samantha Mossman of HVWP, will build an understanding of facilitation as they take an "inquiry stance" toward student learning. They will explore a range of teaching ideas and how to lead colleagues in the study of student work. Through the process, participants will also develop a personally meaningful and manageable classroom inquiry project that would lead to the building of a workshop.

Become an Agent of Critical Hope with Place-Based Writing, July 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., starting at the MJN Convention Center, 14 Civic Center Plaza, will help you expand students' learning beyond your classroom's four walls. Place-based writing can boost student engagement and civic readiness. Facilitator Karen Nichols from HVWP, will lead participants to explore a variety of place-based writing opportunities in the area and discuss how such writing can be a tool for local civic engagement.

Supporting Multi-Lingual Language Learners with the Hudson Valley Writing Project meets July 28-30 from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Dutchess BOCES Conference Center, 5 BOCES Road. Facilitator Danielle Gomez from HVWP, will lead participants in studying firsthand accounts of the challenges multi-lingual language learners face, practicing research-based strategies such as visual thinking strategies and help strengthen instructional practices with asset-based approaches such as translanguaging.
