Summertime is here, and while it is largely about having fun, keeping safe while doing so is vital. Before leaving on break, Salt Point Center students learned tips related to being in the heat and water.
June’s Safety Awareness Month theme was timely, as students may participate in a variety of activities during summer break and given the heat warnings in effect through Saturday, July 4.
“The June safety theme is especially important as many of our students prepare for increased outdoor activities, technology use, camps, vacations and community experiences during the summer months,” Principal Melissa Murphy said. “The activities and lessons included throughout the month are designed to be accessible, engaging and supportive of the diverse learning needs of our students while helping them build practical skills they can apply outside of school.”
Students learned about keeping safe while swimming and spending time both at pools and beaches. The importance of wearing life jackets during boating and water activities was stressed. Afterward, students colored their own paper life jackets red, orange or yellow as those colors are easily spotted in the water.
They also learned to stay out of the water during a lightning storm, to check the color of warning flags at the beach (red means don’t swim, yellow is experienced swimmers only and green is safe for everyone) and to stay close to the shore when swimming at the beach.
Given the increase in temperatures, they were also reminded to stay hydrated.
Another session, not specifically centered on summer, was a cybersecurity refresher because students tend to increase their device use over the summer, Principal Melissa Murphy said.
Have a safe, fun summer!
