Sixteen Career & Technical Institute second-year students who were involved in SkillsUSA, were honored for their hard work during a ceremony June 11.
Students who participated in the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships in April received a certificate for their efforts and those who served as officers for the chapter received a red cord. Sharon Myers, SkillsUSA adviser and work-based learning coordinator, encouraged students to wear the cords at the June 12 CTI recognition ceremony and at graduations in their home school districts to represent the organization. She predicts this batch of students will be future innovators.
“It has been amazing to watch our students as they grew and developed these last two years,” Myers said. “I will be watching to see what value they will add to our communities in the future.”
SkillsUSA AM president Bianca Buel, who studied in the Security & Law program, was happy to receive the recognition and noted that she wanted to get involved with the organization so she could participate in activities related to her trade and the SkillsUSA competition, as well as provide community service.
“It feels better to be part of something bigger than just BOCES,” Buel said. “I wanted to be an officer so I could lead people in the way I wanted it to be led.”
For Buel, she will most miss her fellow SkillsUSA members and said the public speaking skills she learned during her time as president will help in her future endeavors. “I was scared before to speak in front of a lot of people, now I can without a problem,” Buel said.
Congratulations and good luck.
