Industrial Arts Teacher Jodiah Jacobs brought history into his recent puzzle project with Resilience Academy students.
Jacobs taught students how to make their own colorful wooden puzzles, complete with a picture on the inside of the puzzle box upon their return from winter recess. He tied the project to a bit of history about immigration in the United States, explaining to students that when immigrants came to Ellis Island, they had to complete the Feature Profile Test - a puzzle of a face immigrants had to complete in the early 20th century - to help determine their eligibility to enter the United States.
This isn’t the first time Jacobs had students work on a puzzle project, having done it previously with students at Salt Point Center. “I tie the project in with history lessons surrounding Ellis Island and the meaning of immigration,” he said.
