Salt Point Center’s spring book fair is special because it is a buy one, get one free event for the students. It ends today.
As they enter room 110, they are greeted by colorful displays and shelves of books, pens, and related items with something for everyone. Chapter books, picture books, fiction, nonfiction, science activities, magic wands and more are all available for purchase.
Student Joseph Ljuljdjural didn’t want anything to do with fiction books on this visit. “I like nonfiction - social studies, history, books about presidents and popes,” Ljuljdjural said.
As he and his teacher/book fair chairwoman Maria Sita headed over to the nonfiction area, the book “What Are Castles and Knights” by Sarah Fabiny caught his eye. In the end he opted not to purchase it.
Asked about some of his favorite books, he said that in school he enjoys reading about presidents and he specifically “likes learning the years and dates” of their presidencies. Sita said he will figure out someone’s age based on who was president at the time.
“I’m really smart,” Ljuljdural said.
On Thursday morning, volunteers Nicole Ferese and Stacy Swason from the business office greeted students and handled the transactions.
This is the second book fair of the year for SPC. The first takes place in the fall. The choices arrive after Sita speaks with a consultant at Scholastic Book Fair.
“The selections are based on reading abilities, student preferences, sales the previous year and then we use that to determine which categories and grade levels to get for the next one,” Sita said.
Based on sales of the fall book fair, Scholastic provides Scholastic Dollars which are used to purchase curriculum materials for the classrooms. This year it purchased Scholastic news articles.
For the spring sale, some of the proceeds are returned to the school to support the buy one, get one sale. “This way we can provide more books for students,” Sita said.
