BOCES Board Member and veteran Rob Rubin thanks students for the Veterans Day cards they made.
Students at Dutchess BOCES’ Salt Point Center (SPC) honored our country’s veterans with colorful handwritten cards and learned about veterans’ importance. BOCES Board Member and Presiding Officer of the Poughkeepsie Jewish War Veterans Rob Rubin collected the cards, which he personally delivered to local veterans during the Nov. 11 ceremony at the Dutchess County War Memorial in Poughkeepsie.

BOCES Board Member and Presiding Officer of the Poughkeepsie Jewish War Veterans Rob Rubin collected the cards, which he personally delivered to local veterans during the Nov. 11 ceremony at the Dutchess County War Memorial in Poughkeepsie. He briefly spoke to the students on Nov. 10 about what it means to be a veteran and serve overseas.

“They’re in a country where nobody, except a few guys you were with, speaks your language,” Rubin said of soldiers. “That’s what these men and women do.”

Rubin thanked students for the cards.

“These cards mean a lot of heartfelt recognition,” Rubin said. “They are very grateful to you folks.”

Every year at SPC, students learn about veterans and why they should be celebrated.

In Special Education teacher Amber Gunn’s class, students and staff spoke about veterans in their families as they made some extra cards for them. Christine Ciccone’s fifth grade class were happy to make cards and learned about the differences between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Sixth grader David K. wants to join the Army when he is older, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. He considers Veterans Day an important holiday.

“They saved our lives and protected our country,” he said. “My grandfather used to show me the American Flag and tell me about it.”

While growing up, Principal Melissa Murphy was very close with her grandfather, a World War II Veteran, who served in the US Merchant Marines.

“Listening to wartime stories told by my Poppy was mesmerizing,” Murphy remembered. “He was always so proud of our country and his service.”
