In partnership with Mount Saint Mary College, the Southeastern New York Library Council, and the Dutchess, Rockland, Sullivan, Orange-Ulster, and Ulster School Library Systems, our second Banned Books Symposium will be taking place on March 7, 2020 on the MSMC campus. This half-day conference will feature presentations on all aspects of dealing with controversial literature in K-12 schools and libraries, including banned and challenged books.  Our keynote speaker will be Nick Bruel, New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of children's books including the “Bad Kitty” series.

Sessions will be formatted in 45-minute blocks with time for Q&A. Topic suggestions include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • K-12 classroom teacher or school librarian experience with a book challenge
  • Using challenged/banned books in the classroom
  • Policies and procedures when a book is challenged
  • Policies regarding the use of controversial literature in schools
  • Communicating with parents and the community about controversial literature
  • Programs surrounding banned books
  • Other relevant topics
