Created by Mrs. Van Vlack's Fourth Grade Class

2000/2001

As part of this on-line project called "Playin' Around" my fourth grade class developed games that could be played during recess.  The children were allowed to work individually or in groups.  There were encouraged to incorporate other playground equipment that was available for their use outside.  They could also include other commonly found equipment (such as kick balls or tennis balls.)  Each game had to be explained thoroughly in written form including the number of players, time it would take to play, and any equipment or other important factors.

Our Playground Games

Fireball

     Equipment:  tennis ball
     Number of players:  2-6
How to play:  One person is the thrower.  The thrower throws the ball towards the people in front of him.  The ball cannot hit the ground.  The others in front of the thrower try to catch the ball.  After the people in front catch the ball four times, then they are the thrower.

Space Invaders

Equipment:  10 "soft" balls (like Nerf)
Number of players:  at least 13 people
How to play:  Scatter the balls around on the ground.  One person is "It" and if he tags a person with a ball then they're "It" with him.  The last person to get hit with a ball is the one who starts the next game.

Mummy

     Equipment:  blindfold, soft ball
Number of players:  3 or more
How to play:  Everyone stands in a circle.  One person is the Mummy.  They wear a blindfold and try to tags others with the ball.  If someone gets tagged then they are the Mummy.  All the people have stay in the circle or they are it.  You can try to duck if the Mummy tries to tag you.

Kick Tennis

Equipment:  kickball, eight cones, something to divide the playing field in half (like a stick or yarn)
     Number of players:  2-4 people
How to play:  You play the game either one-on-one or two-on-two.  Put the field divider in the middle of the field and place the cones so that there are four on each side with room in between them for the other team to try to kick the ball through.           0pts.  *   1 pt. *     2 pts.  *     1 pt.    *   0 pts.

(cones)      *             *                 *               *           Flip a coin to see who goes first.  Then the teams take turns kicking the ball from their cones and trying to score as many points as they can.  The other team can try to block the ball.  when they block the ball then it's their turn to kick.  The team with the most points at the end wins.

Tenerball

Equipment:  tennis racket, tennis ball, baseball field
     Number of players:  10
How to play:  Pick two teams of five players.  It's like kick ball, but you use a tennis racket and ball, and you have to run around the bases two times to score a run.  The first time you touch home plate you automatically go to first base again.  Two people can be on the same base together.  Also there are five outs instead of three.  When the ball is hit if it goes out of bounds it is still a fair ball.  The pitcher throws the ball and you hit it with the racket.    You have to run as fast as you can.  If someone catches the ball in the air then you are out.  You can also get them out by pegging them with the ball.  The team with the most runs scored wins.

Hit and Run

Equipment:  lots of soft scrunchy balls
     Number of players:  3-30 people
How to play:  everybody starts out with a ball.  if you hit somebody by throwing the scrunchy ball you have to chase them and tag them.  The that person is out.  The last person who is left wins.

Blinfold Kickball

     Equipment:  blindfold, kickball
Number of players:  10-24 players (2 teams)
How to play:  Players in the field close their eyes (except the pitcher) then the other team's players take turns to kick the ball and run to first base.  The pitcher calls out the name of their player who is nearest to the ball.  That person opens their eyes and gets the ball and tries to get the person out.  You win by getting the most runs scored.

Survivor

     Equipment:  ball
Number of players:  up to 10
How to play:  On person throws the ball for another to try to catch.  When you are catching the ball you have to close your eyes.  if you don't catch the ball you are a rotten ball and you are out until another person gets out.  After you are a rotten ball five times you are out of the game.  The last person left (the survivor) is the winner.

Tri-Bounce

     Equipment:  tennis ball
     Number of players:  3 players
How to play:  Everyone stands in the shape of a triangle.  The first person bounce the ball high to the next player then the next.  The players keep bouncing the ball around the triangle.  The last person to bounce the ball before it stops or goes out of the triangle is out.  Then the two players who are left in the triangle face across from each other and they bounce the ball back and forth.  Again the person who touches it last is out.  The one who is left is the winner.
