This illustration shows Elizabeth Cady Stanton addressing the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. In the 1840’s respectable women did not speak in public, and calling a meeting was almost unheard of. Stanton said later, "We felt helpless and hopeless, as if we had suddenly been asked to construct a steam engine."
