In colonial times the only ways to travel were by water or land. For example, people rode on horses, walked, and used boats or wagons pulled by horses. Most people walked from place to place on old Native American paths. They did not have cars, trains or planes. It was slow and difficult to travel. Later on they made the paths wider and better. Then stagecoaches and covered wagons could go on the paths. Most early colonists did not go far from their home, but if they did the easiest way to go would be by boat.
