We will be discussing PBLWorks frameworks for Gold Standard Project Design and Teaching Practices and working to build these practices into our planning and instructional practices. The program will involve monthly group workshops as well as opportunities for individual support and classroom visits. We will work to model the practices we want to see in our classes by creating a community where we can all gain the knowledge and skills we need to thrive, provide each other with feedback, and support each other throughout the process.

5. Elementary School and Middle School Building Leaders Network

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: Administrators - Middle School Building Leaders

Five facilitated meetings provide a forum for building leaders to share challenges, successes, ideas, and best practices. These virtual meetings provide participants opportunities to collaborate with colleagues around timely topics offering opportunity for professional growth and the development of a network of peers.



All principals and assistant principals are invited to join our county-wide School Building Leader Network. The purpose of this network is to strengthen communication and collaboration and can be a valuable avenue for providing direction and support. The Dutchess BOCES county-wide School Building Leader meetings are structured to provide a forum to discuss, share, learn, and support the important work of building leaders.

7. Data Team Training - Pawling Central School ONLY

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: Pawling Teachers

Dates: 4/2/2024 to 5/23/2024

This full team training will include opportunities for participants to learn what a Data Team does, how to review/analyze data using protocols, plan and implement interventions, and interpret the results. Dutchess BOCES will provide instruction and guided facilitation during the sessions, while gradually releasing control of the process to the Data Team. The Data Team will then implement a course of action based on the data, review/analyze the data, and then discuss and implement a new course of action. The process is intended to build an understanding of the cyclical nature of Data Teams and support the foundational expectations necessary to build a culture for data-driven decision-making.


Participants will be able to:


• Identify the parts and expectations of each component of the data cycle.


• Organize, facilitate, and participate in meetings using an agenda and protocols.


• Use data protocols to review and analyze data.


• Develop a theory of student learning needs based on the data.


• Design and implement a researched-based instructional strategy in all classrooms.


• Support and facilitate the rollout of the action plan to the rest of the faculty/staff.


• Assess the action plan after its implementation using the data from its assessment.


• Determine next steps.


These are the first two sessions of the 6 part series. The additional sessions will take place during the 2024-25 school and will have a separate registration entry.

9. PBIS Tier 2 Systems Team Training Series

Program: Regional Partnership Center

Audience: School teams of educators: School’s MTSS Team. PBIS Tier 2 implementation team that should include ideally administrators, teachers, and/or support staff

This professional learning package provides an overview, along with the steps needed to build the systems to support a continuum of Tier 2 interventions within a multi-tiered system of support of behavior with an educational organization. The goal of this professional development is to build the capacity of the school in developing the systems, practices and data components of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. This comprehensive series is designed to prepare a school team to implement a trauma-informed, positive behavior system with Tier 2 interventions for the following school year. Administrators are invited to the first session (Monday April 15) with their teams or they can wait to form/clarify their school teams after this first session. It's important that a consistent group can be established with a designated administrator supporting the team. The Monday dates for this series include: April 15 (can be admin leader only or admin with their team) then April 22, May 6, May 13, June 3 and June 17. All sessions via Zoom from 9:30 - 11 am. 13. Foundations of Reading Instruction: Understanding the Science of Reading

This PD is the first in a series of trainings based on the science of reading. Consequently, this initial module is not comprehensive. It is designed to be an understandable introduction and meant for a wide audience. Participants will be able to: Describe the current status of reading achievement of students in the United States and New York State. Describe the gap between what is known about effective reading instruction and the implementation of effective reading instruction. Identify theories of reading that are supported by research. List the skills that are essential for proficient reading and how to best teach those skills. A Zoom Link will be sent out prior to the beginning of the PD. Please note that the training may be cancelled if attendance is low.

16. NYS Literacy Initiative: An Overview of the NYSED Literacy Briefs

On January 10th, the State Education Department, in partnership with BOCES across the state, held a hybrid webinar in which a new series of literacy briefs focused on the science of reading were released. The keynote for the presentation was provided by Dr. Nonie K Lesaux, Roy Edward Larsen Professor of Education and Human Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dutchess BOCES is pleased to offer another facilitated session, which will be identical to the initial hybrid webinar, for all administrators and literacy leaders who were unable to attend the initial event. The agenda will include an overview of the science of reaching and each of the seven literacy briefs, with time to reflect and discuss with colleagues. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the briefs with Dr. Lesaux and the SED team.

17. Alternatives to Suspension

Program: Regional Partnership Center

Audience: This workshop is intended for district administrators, building administrators, and PBIS/MTSS team members at the Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3 level. Participants are strongly encouraged to register and attend with a team of people from their setting.

This 3-day in-person workshop is intended to help participants understand that exclusionary practices have significant short and long-term negative effects on academic, social-emotional, health and family outcomes and that there are prevention strategies and alternative approaches to discipline that lead to improved student outcomes. Participants will gain knowledge of the recent research on school suspensions and disproportionality, examine scenarios when alternatives to suspension may be used to change behavior, learn how a systemic change on the approach to discipline and problem behavior can affect school climate, and learn about several practical, research-based strategies to use as effective alternatives to suspension. There will be 3 sessions, the first on April 25,2024, the second on May 8, 2024 and the last on June 6, 2024.

Fostering High Expectations and Rigorous Instruction is one of four high leverage principles identified in the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE) Framework. Research shows that teachers' expectations of students can influence their academic achievement and behavior. Teachers are more likely to under-estimate students with disabilities, students from low-income families, English Language Learners, and Black, Latinx, and Native American students. By the end of this training, participants will:

• Understand how high expectations and rigorous instruction can improve student outcomes

• Reflect on cultural background and identities, and how those identities may influence teacher expectations

• Develop strategies for fostering high expectations and rigorous instruction

• Identify 2-3 next steps for ongoing professional learning * This is a two-part online course offered synchronously via Zoom. Each session will be 3 hours. The purpose of Implementing Unregistered WBL (WBL) Experiences is to provide Educational Organizations (EOs) with the foundational knowledge of what high-quality WBL unregistered WBL experiences look like in New York State (NYS) including but not limited to reviewing in-depth unregistered experiences, discussing the alignment of WBL and the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential, identifying high-quality instructional practices that support the implementation of WBL, and determining specific areas that may increase the success rate of the WBL program.

20. Attribution Theory and Growth Mindset: More Than Words or Labels (PreK-12) / Using NYS Next Generation ELA Standards for Rigor and Equality (PreK-) 12

In this game-based workshop, participants will examine and expand their own beliefs about why some students are more successful than others. Participants will identify language that they will use in the classroom to replace language they may currently use in order to hold the door open to hope and opportunity for all students. Participants will identify what classroom policies and practices they have in place that enhance the promise held by each student, and/or which policies and practices they want to adopt. Participants will also play a game to learn more about how the Next Generation Standards are designed, and will plan for the use of these standards to build rigor and equity. Participants will find this workshop most helpful if they bring along a unit of instruction they have planned for the near future. (Each participant must purchase a Next-Generation Standards book for $24, provided by the presenter.)

21. Moving Towards 3D Assessment in the Science Classroom - PART 2

22. Testing Accommodations for Students with Disabilities - May 2024

This training was developed to promote the understanding and appropriate use of test accommodations for students with disabilities. The training is intended to provide information related to the decision-making process and types of test accommodations, as well as the documentation of appropriate accommodations on the individualized education program (IEP). Computer-based testing and the implementation of "tests read" and scribing will also be covered. Expected outcomes: Students will be provided access to and participate in general education curriculum and in courses that will prepare them to take and pass the required examinations. 23. School Library System Advisory Council Meeting

The Dutchess BOCES School Library System Advisory Council meets quarterly to recommend policy, review the annual budget, and perform long-range and short-range planning, including overseeing the development of the system's Plan of Service. Participants work to approve the annual system budget and report. School librarians, public librarians, and a Southeastern NY Library Resources Council representative serve on the advisory board.

24. Banned Books Symposium: Proactive, Reactive & Supportive

Program: School Library System

Audience: K-16 Educators and Parents

This half-day conference will feature presentations in all capacities of banned and challenged books and programs. The event includes two breakout sessions with a choice of presentations from academic, school and public librarians followed by lunch and the keynote speaker Jeff Trexler, Interim Director, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The cost per person is $25. The registration and payment deadline is April 19, 2024. Registration is mandatory for this half-day conference. 26. Reading Strategies in the Cross-Disciplinary Environment

Program: Educational Resources

Audience: Grades 6-12 Teachers; 6-12 Reading Teachers; Curriculum Directors; High School Principals and Assistant Principals; Middle School Principals and Assistant Principals;

This course is an adaptation of the work of Jennifer Serravallo for the cross-disciplinary environment and involves cognitive, metacognitive and management strategies, expository text content, as it relates to topics and main ideas, key details, vocabulary, text features, conversation, and writing about reading. Participants will also engage in planning texts carefully for engagement, motivation, and skill match, as well as work with their curriculum maps to revise for more specification. Content standards will be matched to particular reading strategies. Prompts will be planned, and readers will be examined to identify implications for units.

Project based learning is an exciting way to engage students in collaborative projects that will push them to think critically, develop 21st century skills, and to learn more deeply. 31. Phonological Awareness: Establishing Foundations for Reading Success

The purpose of this training is to help participants gain a greater understanding of the Science of Reading; specifically, what phonological awareness is and how crucial this skillset is to the foundation of reading success. The training will also provide context for the importance of using assessments to improve the effectiveness of phonological instruction for students. To overcome equity barriers, educators need to focus on systemic, explicit instruction to teach the skills supported by the science of reading.

32. DASA(Dignity Act for All Students)

The DASA law was passed by NYS in 2010. We are partnering with Demco to offer a free book care workshop with Kimberly Young, the Book Doctor. Book Doctor Workshops provide book care training with the aim of helping you keep your collection in circulation longer. Training includes protection and repair techniques and offers:

• Tried-and-true methods for a variety of repairs

Kimberly will tailor the 3-hour training to your specific needs but workshops typically cover basic page repairs, tip-ins, hinge and spine repairs, book jacket and laminate applications, and how to reinforce spines.

The Specially Designed Instruction for Administrators professional development training package is the fifth in a suite of trainings on the development and use of specially designed instruction (SDI) for students with disabilities. This training is intended to further develop an administrator's knowledge of SDI and how SDI should be designed and developed based on individual student need to address their learning obstacles. The content is most beneficial for building administrators and new special education administrators; however, all administrators are welcome.
