Course Description:
New Visions: Health Care is an in-depth study of the U.S. health care system. Students observe staff in their actual work situations. This concept allows students to explore a variety of health career professions while integrating their academic knowledge with the experience of working in a hospital. Students spend approximately 3 to 4 hours of each day in either department rotations throughout the hospital or in traditional classroom setting. BOCES offers this program in partnership with Vassar Brothers Hospital and St. Francis Hospital.
Program Objectives:
The New Visions student must:
- Apply previous academic knowledge and skills to professional tasks and problems.
- Develop career plans based on the knowledge gained through experiential learning.
- Begin preparation for professional health care careers [two or four year college].
Overview:
New Visions is an exciting new approach to program delivery for eligible high school seniors. It provides an in-depth overview of health careers by placing the student into an actual hospital work environment. New Visions successfully integrates English and Social Studies into a meaningful curriculum based on health care issues. It provides a sense of closure to the senior year and a directed transition to the next step of professional development.

Student Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a senior from a Dutchess BOCES component district.
- Have demonstrated an interest and desire to learn about health care careers.
- Be academically sound and have met graduation requirements prior to acceptance into the program.
- Exhibit a high level of responsibility and maturity with the ability to work in a team, as well as individually; the New Visions represents the home school.
- Be conscientious and highly motivated to succeed.
- Have completed three years of math and science.
- Been recommended by a high school guidance counselor and principal.
- Plan to attend college or post-secondary education.
- Be able to provide own transportation to and from the hospital.
Career Opportunities:
Students develop a wide variety of career oriented skills and competencies in the health care setting. Involvement in multiple aspects of health care will allow students to focus on the identification of a course of study on the college level; i.e.:
