Adaptive Transition Program
The newly-created Adaptive Occupational School-to-Work Transition Program consists of a multilevel, multi-year experience whose goal is to transition classified special education students, aged 15 - 21, to the world of employment. These students, whose IEP indicates they are IEP diploma bound, will be placed in a 1-15-1 class, with a specially trained occupational teacher and teacher assistant.
Students entering this program will initially rotate through a multi-occupational exploratory phase consisting of four 10-week choices. One choice will be a career exploration internship. During the internship, students will spend time at a variety of employment locations observing and evaluating the responsibilities of a specific occupation.
During this first year exploration, staff will determine the current functioning levels of the student, as well as administer a professional vocational evaluation. They will assess aptitude, teach foundation skills and workplace competencies, as well as develop life skills. They will also provide career counseling to their students. As this phase approaches completion, teachers will confer with the student, parents, and home school personnel regarding the student’s placement in the second phase Specialized Skill Development Program.
During the second phase Specialized Skill Development Program, students will develop trade specific skills, established at industry standards. Skills will be competency-based, with 90% accuracy required for mastery. The continuation of the teaching of Scans skills will be an integral part of the curriculum.
During the third phase of the program, the goal is to transition the student to employment. Students will spend part of each week at a job site specific to their area of training. This will provide the opportunity for development of advanced trade skills. While in class, students will develop workplace competencies, presentation portfolios, interview skills, etc.
At the conclusion of this phase, the goal of the School-to-Work Program is to transition the student to employment.

As of October 1986, CTI has been authorized by the State Education Department to offer an Alternative Occupational Education Equivalency Program.
The primary purpose of the alternative program is to improve a student’s self-image toward school and the learning process with the intent of phasing the student back into the regular school setting or allowing the student to obtain a General Education Diploma.
Students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed the school year during which they reached 16 years of age. Additionally, students must be deficient in the number of units of credit amassed during their school career. At risk, potential dropouts or students who have already made plans to exit from school may be eligible for admittance.
The program will provide curriculums in Math, Science, Life Skills, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies along with an occupational component. All segments of the program will be offered at CTI on an extended day. Students will enroll in regular occupational course offerings and will receive a minimum of twelve hours per week of basic alternative education classes in the above disciplines. Students will be recommended by their home school districts and must receive variances from the State Education Department prior to acceptance.
